Dinah Lombard recently turned 80. What a wonderful milestone. And all thanks to the Grace of God. Dinah is my grandmother, my mother's mother.
These are the days I missed most while living in the UK. Being able to join in the celebrations of special birthday and events. A Sunday family braai is also a big favourite. Blood is thicker than water and my family have always been a very safe place for me. Where you will always be accepted for who you are and loved unconditionally.
Ouma Dinah is strong and very capable. And even at 80 years of age she is still a very beautiful woman!! She raised 4 children and ran a very successful guesthouse in Vanrhynsdorp in the Namaqualand. I have very fond memories visiting Vanrhynsdorp as a little girl. This is where I learnt to drive a car, target shooting and every holiday my mom taught me how to knit. My memories of Christmas at the Lombards Guesthouse is filled with Noot vir Noot on the TV, Beer shandies, leg of lamb on the table and dressing up as Maria.
Oupa Nico Lombard passed away 2 years ago. They were married for 57 years. Oupa Nico would always jokingly say 'I have thought about murder a few times, but divorce never crossed my mind'. We can learn so much from the older generations. They are filled with wisdom and I feel incredibly blessed to still have 2 grandmothers in my life.
Ouma Dinah is always the first to 'congratulate' me on a magazine cover or comment on 'Boer soek 'n vrou'. She is just so proud of me. The love between grandparents and grandchildren are so special and I'm so very blessed that my two little girls can also experience this kind of love.
Baie lief vir jou, Ouma.
